Endurance Karting Enjoys Successful Inaugural 24 Hours of America
Plans Already Made for
2008 Renewal of the Event
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (Jan. 17, 2007)—
After months of anticipation, Endurance Karting enjoyed a highly successful
inaugural 24 Hours of America at Moroso Motorsports Park in West Palm Beach,
Fla., Jan. 6-7. Twenty-four teams comprised a field that consisted of
domestic and international teams, as well as stars from racing’s top
circuits. In the end, 333 Racing etched its name in the record books as the
winner of Endurance Karting’s first 24-hour race on American soil.
The race was so successful, in fact, that
Endurance Karting already announced plans for a second 24 Hours of America
Jan. 11-13, 2008. Moroso Motorsports Park will again host the event, and
the field will be open to up to 35 teams.
The inaugural race weekend began Friday with
pre-race activities including an advanced racing school that afforded
drivers one more chance to sharpen their skills. The starting grid was set
in the qualifying session that evening. Team PBG won the opportunity to
lead the field to the green flag Saturday afternoon. Team PBG consisted of
such talent as NASCAR Busch Series driver Trevor Bayne, NASCAR Craftsman
Truck Series driver Chad McCumbee and NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series driver David
Ragan, whose next driving challenge will include assuming driving duties of
the No. 6 Roush Racing Ford, recently vacated by Mark Martin.
The pole-winning team was not the only team to
boast professional racers. Shane Lewis, Daytona Protoype driver and veteran
of several 24-hour races, offered his talents to Ricard Racing/Team Moroso
and former Toyota Pro Atlantic Series star and current racing talent
scout Richie Hearn fielded Team Brighthouse. John Freeman, who will advance
to the Busch Series in 2007, drove for Team Jam’d. Drivers came from as far
away as Canada and France to compete on the 13-turn, .9-mile (1,280 meters)
course owned by one of racing’s most predominant families. Drivers’ ages
ranged from teens to 60s. The race was a world-class battle among those
drivers from many walks of life.
Despite their racing resume, age or
nationality, the race was a challenge for one and all. Drivers battled
fatigue, anxiety and a host of other emotions, along with the typical
Florida humidity, for 24 non-stop hours. Driver changes occurred every 45
minutes, while fuel runs lasted slightly over two hours. With the fastest
karts posting lap times around one minute, 10 seconds, speed was of the
essence both in the pits and on the track.
Twenty-four hours and 1,176 laps after the
green flag waved, 333 Racing that captured the checkered flag just over a
minute before runner-up Team Canada crossed the start/finish line. Team
Jam’d, Andretti Indoor Racing and Gatorz Racing completed the top five. The
333 Racing team also won the GT40 Pro Class, which consisted of drivers over
age 40 with considerable racing experience. The GTP class, consisting of
professional drivers, was won by Team Canada. Team Crawdad 2, Z Frogs, EMC
Watchdog Racing and Chicago Indoor Racing clinched class honors for the GT1,
GT40, GTBB and GTSP classes, respectively.
The 24 Hours of America was a triumphant launch
to the 2007 season. Some of Endurance Karting’s regular driving schools and
endurance events have already been scheduled for March 29 – April 1 in
Jacksonville, Fla., and May 4-6 in Charlotte, N.C., with more events
expected to be scheduled soon. More than 1,000 unique participants step
behind the wheel of and Endurance Karting kart each year. Isn’t it time you
